CEI Performs Database Migration for Logistics Company

< Back

Business Issue
This trucking and logistics company was in the midst of a corporate standardization effort on Microsoft technologies when they sent out an RFP to migrate its core Imaging System from an Informix backend to a Microsoft backend. As projections for future business grew, the scalability and flexibility of the current system was not sufficient to meet the changing needs of the business units and their customers. This Imaging System not only supports the day-to-day operations of the trucking logistics, it also serves as a data repository for other external applications. The interoperability challenges created by this system did not lend itself to effective utilization of its core assets. The company wanted to migrate this solution to a pure Microsoft solution.

CEI Solution
CEI used a blended onshore/offshore delivery team for this project, providing the client with a quality, cost-effective solution. The project consisted of two major components. The first was the pure migration of the 50Gb database from Informix to SQL Server 2000. This was accomplished by conducting a gap analysis between the syntax and implementation of certain features in each RDMS. This gap analysis became the reference document for all additional development activities. The second component to the solution was to analyze each application module with this Imaging System to determine what changes need to be applied to the application to work with the new SQL Server 2000 database. Analysis work was done on-site with the client, while pure software engineering activities were conducted by our offshore development center.

Results
CEI was able to wrap its arms around all the complexities of the Imaging System, including the compilation of code and enhancements that had grown over the past 9 years. It was successfully delivered to the client as a seamless integration to their end users’ desktops. Overall, the new system is paving the way for greater interoperability, enhanced performance, standardization within the IT organization and enhanced feature sets as the company explores .NET opportunities.
