CEI Provides Blended Delivery of Global Logistics System
< Back
This client is a $10 billion food processing and distribution company with a global presence. Over recent years, the company’s sales have climbed rapidly. Yet, until now, its business operations like Shipment Planning Integration, Port Management and Inventory Management have not been automated to scale and manage its growing business. The company’s Global Logistics supports the day-to-day operations of shipping products across the globe. They needed an online system to better meet the company’s business demand.
As this client’s long-standing service provider, CEI was called in to develop this online system. CEI used a blended onshore/offshore delivery team for this project to provide the client a quality and cost-effective solution. The goal of the solution was to offer in-depth functionality to assist their personnel in managing port inventories, shipment information, vessel data, voyage activities, documents required for payment and reporting on logistic activities.
The solution used Open Source technologies and was based on the Open Source architecture with a high level view of the application modules. These application modules were logically based on the company’s day-to-day business operations. The onshore team gathered the business requirements worldwide. These business requirements were supplemented with conceptual Data Model and Use Cases associated with the particular business functionality. The offshore development team conceptualized the business requirements and designed a technical architecture that conforms to the growing business requirements of the client. The offshore team prepared a comprehensive General Design Document and a Physical Data Model. A Proof of Concept was also developed through the technologies such as J2EE, Struts and Design Patterns that were used for the implementation of the Logistics system.
The Global Logistics system was successfully put into operation as a web based system to synchronize planning activities among several of the company’s organizations worldwide. These organizations do inventory, selling and shipping of commodities to their global customers. Today, the client’s logistics system enables over 500 users across the world to manage their day-to-day operations. In addition, the top management can view the multifaceted tasks executed by various users online, for better decision-making. Upon successful completion of project, CEI was awarded a support and maintenance contract for specific modules.
